NM type is a collaborative type foundry between typeface designers Noel Pretorius and María Ramos.

They create custom fonts for international clients, distribute their own typeface designs, and work in experimental type.

The creative duo met in England while doing their masters in Typeface Design at Reading University. Now they collaborate closely despite their physical distance, Noel being based in Sweden and María in Spain. Although they are a young type foundry their projects have already got international recognition.

Kinetic, their first retail typeface on the market, was awarded by the New York Type Directors Club. They have also done worldwide custom designs for international clients such as Jägermeister.

Noel is an independent graphic and typeface designer, originally from Durban, South Africa. After obtaining his National Diploma in graphic design at the Durban University of Technology he worked as an art director and graphic designer both in London and in Stockholm. He has worked with clients like Amnesty International, Stella Artois and Tiger of Sweden. Amongst others his projects have been awarded by Cannes, D&AD and Loeries.

María is a designer from Spain. After obtaining her degree in advertising, she started to work in graphic and editorial design in her home region, Galicia. Based in Santiago de Compostela, she is also an independent researcher, who writes for specialised publications in typography (e.g. Alphabettes.org and Typographica.org), and talks at international conferences (e.g. ATypI and Encontro de Tipografia).

NM type’s philosophy brings together art, history and design. They believe in defining strong design concepts when creating new typefaces. Together they are experimenting to find new ways to shape the alphabet.
